Abstract Within the scope of a thesis and a dissertation, the quality of data attainable in online surveys is examined. The central question is whether online surveys introduce bias which result from the characteristics of the survey method. Therefore results of online surveys are compared with results of conventional surveys (such as CATI). The questionnaires in use are as identical as possible. However in contrast to previous studies in this field, the same sample will be used to compare between two survey methods. Thus sampling errors which often limit the quality of comparative studies can be avoided. Furthermore, the process is repeated in reverse order with a second sample (see fig. 1) in order to eliminate non-contributory bias such as learning effects. This study will contribute to the ongoing discussion about specific effects of online surveys; the results are being presented.
