Google search results eligible for WebSM
Oct 10 2005
The WebSM site systematically overviews new entries in almost 100 sources. Among them, the first 100 search results/hits from Google and Google Scholar are routinely checked every few months. However, we decided to systematically check the later entries from these search results.
We made a search with Google and Google Scholar pages about how many additional units will be applicable to the WebSM. The key word search was “web survey” and “internet survey”.
We made a systematic sample of 50 units (links) out of 539 (Google) and 887 (Google Scholar) results/hits for both pages. We found the following:
-
With Google 30 units aout of 50 (60%) were eligible for WebSM inclusion; among them we already had around a half, i.e. 17 units in our database. In total we could roughly estimate that one third (34%) of 539 hits would be eligible for inclusion into WebSM.
-
With Google Scholar 36% of units were usable for WebSM and among them we also had around a half. In total, a good tenth (12%) out of 887 hits from Google Scholar would be eligible for the inclusion into WebSM.
Surprisingly, the density of eligible hits did not decrease with hits listed more to the end of the search outcome. As a result, we decided to systematically check and include all the missing items from both sources. We expect around 200 new entries.
